Understanding 3D Scanning Technology: FOFUS Scan Educational Guide
3D scanning is transforming how we preserve, reproduce, and innovate across industries in Kerala. FOFUS Scan brings this technology to your doorstep at Rs 1,800/hour. This guide explains the technology, applications, and process in simple terms.
What is 3D Scanning?
3D scanning captures the physical shape and appearance of a real-world object and converts it into a digital 3D model. Think of it as a 3D camera — instead of a flat 2D photo, you get the complete shape, curves, and dimensions of an object.
Types of 3D Scanning Technology
Laser Triangulation
A laser line is projected onto the object. A camera captures how the line deforms across the surface. Software calculates depth using triangulation. The Creality RaptorX used by FOFUS Scan employs 34 cross blue lasers and 7 parallel blue lasers for this.
Structured Light
A projector casts patterns of light onto the object. Cameras capture the deformation. FOFUS Scan also uses NIR (near-infrared) structured light for dark surfaces and outdoor scanning.
Photogrammetry
Multiple photos are taken from different angles. Software finds common points across photos to build 3D geometry. FOFUS Scan uses iPhone photogrammetry for large objects and scenes.
FOFUS Scan Capabilities
The Creality RaptorX scanner used by FOFUS Scan offers metrology-grade 0.02mm accuracy. It can scan objects from 5mm to 4,000mm (13 feet). Black and metal surfaces scan without spray. Full body scans take just 2 minutes.
Applications in Kerala
- Jewelry manufacturing (Thrissur): Digitise traditional designs for CAD/CAM. Read about jewelry scanning in Thrissur.
- Reverse engineering (Palakkad): Reproduce obsolete industrial parts. Learn about reverse engineering in Palakkad.
- Heritage preservation (all Kerala): Digitise temple idols and sculptures. Discover heritage scanning.
- Automotive: Scan and reproduce car parts. See automotive scanning.
The FOFUS Scan Process
- Scan: We capture your object with RaptorX or iPhone photogrammetry
- Clean: Remove noise, fill holes, align multiple passes
- Optimize: Produce clean mesh ready for CAD or printing
- Print (optional): 3D print the model in PLA, PETG, or resin
3D Scanning vs 3D Printing
3D scanning converts physical objects into digital models. 3D printing converts digital models into physical objects. FOFUS Scan does both — scan any object, then 3D print it back. Read our complete guide to 3D scanning in Kerala.
